The area that is now Shrewsbury was first separated into farms in 1890. It wasn’t until 1913 that the city, named after an English village, was officially incorporated. Shrewsbury today is home to more than 6,500 residents and a number of businesses, all working together to create “a community filled with pride.” Shrewsbury offers a multitude of youth activities – including Young People’s Theater and Youth Basketball Tournament – and an equally plentiful number of adult programs, such as Cemetery Tales and Instant Piano. The city also hosts numerous special events throughout the year, including the Shrewsbury Fall Festival, Ram’s Rally Chili and Hot Wings Cook-Off and Make a Difference Day. From day to day, Shrewsbury residents can take advantage of many recreational, dining and cultural opportunities. They have access to four excellent parks, bowling lanes, an aquatic center and a theater complex, in addition to several restaurants. The city’s location is also ideal. Only about 7 miles from the city of St. Louis down Interstate 44, Shrewsbury prides itself on maintaining a small town atmosphere while offering access to big city attractions. Real estate is affordable. A variety of lovely homes, from smaller traditional houses to majestic Victorian-style estate properties, are available at prices to suit any lifestyle. Life in Shrewsbury is perfectly encapsulated by the city’s mission statement: “Citizens and businesses of Shrewsbury will share in a rich tradition of community values, resources and outstanding quality of life.”
